Balance of power

In parliamentary politics, the term balance of power sometimes informally describes the pragmatic mechanism exercised by a minor political party or other grouping whose guaranteed support may enable an otherwise minority government to obtain and hold office. The term itself is partially a misnomer of its misapplication from geopolitics in the twentieth century and European politics in the nineteenth century involved, for example, in the assessment of the conditions of war following the Napoleonic campaigns across Europe .
