JOHNTYLER

John Tyler

John Tyler was the tenth President of the United States . A native of Virginia, Tyler served as a state legislator, governor, U.S. representative, and U.S. senator before winning election as Vice President in 1840. Although he was a Democrat, he ran on the Whig ticket with William Henry Harrison. He became president on the death of Harrison in April 1841. A firm believer in American exceptionalism and national destiny, President Tyler sought to strengthen and preserve the Union through territorial expansion, most famously the annexation of the independent Republic of Texas in his last days in office.
