The swastika is a symbol that originated from Hinduism and generally takes the form of an equilateral cross, with its four arms bent at 90 degrees. There are many similarly-shaped symbols that westerners refer to as swastikas, but the indigenous users of these symbols never called them by this name. The earliest archaeological evidence of swastika-shaped ornaments dates back to the Indus Valley Civilization as well as the Mediterranean Classical Antiquity and paleolithic Europe.
