Torpor is an umbrella-term used to categorize a state of regulated metabolic suppression in animals, typically to levels below what are normally essentially the minimum, so-called, basal metabolic rate ; this does not exclude the possibility that torpor can be triggered from an elevated metabolic position and may terminate before reaching below BMR .
