I’m trying to wean myself off of CrossFire and move to Ingrid full-time, because Ingrid is an excellent (and free!) crossword construction tool. One thing Ingrid does that CrossFire does not is make barred crosswords, and our friend Quiara noted recently that this ability makes “Going Too Far” puzzles possible to construct. What’s a “Going Too Far” puzzle, you ask? Here are the notes for this one:
Several of the answers in this crossword are too long and won’t fit in the spaces provided. Each of these answers will either begin or end in the gray square immediately before or after it. When the puzzle is done, all the gray squares will have been used exactly once. The letters in them (reading left to right, line by line) will spell out a quip from Somerset Maugham that may as well have been about this puzzle type.
Thanks go out to Kate for testing this one! She said it was doable and fun even if this puzzle type is new to you, so that’s a good sign.
Once you’ve solved this puzzle, why don’t you head over to The Deli Counter to solve my recent collab with meatdaddy?
