I have been trying to make a Two-Tone puzzle for SO long. “How hard could it be?” I thought, as I had easily come up with tools to help create snake charmer and spiral puzzles. But for a very long time, I just couldn’t crack the logic for Two-Tones. Until now! We’ve got a brand-new Two-Tone creation tool for your enjoyment, and we’ve used it to create today’s puzzle.

What’s a Two-Tone puzzle?

Each entry in a Two-Tone puzzle begins on its correspondingly numbered square and proceeds along the path winding clockwise and inwards, ending at the center. Some entries occupy only consecutive gray squares (skipping the white squares in between), some occupy only consecutive white squares (skipping the gray squares), and some occupy all consecutive squares without skipping any. When the grid is complete, every square will be used in exactly two entries.

I feel like I don’t give a shout-out to Jeff’s Kotwords tools as much as I should. It’s what allows me to make all the variety puzzles you find on this site, as well as the acrostics on my Patreon. If you ever want to make a variety crossword, that’s where you need to go. Thanks, Jeff!

Hey, we ran a contest a while back, and we have results! But first we have spoiler space for people who haven’t solved it and still want to.

Three TV-themed entries in the puzzle, each of which consists of two Sondheim* musicals. The HBO documentary in question is thus Six By Sondheim, which was the brainchild of my A24 collaborator Frank Rich. You should check out the A24 book! It’s really good.

*okay, he didn’t write the music for Gypsy, but he did write the lyrics, so I say it counts

Thanks to Meg for the sweet solution grid!

We also have a winner to announce! We received 39 correct entries, and the randomly chosen winner is Kelsey Dixon! Kelsey has selected Patrick Berry’s Set Design as her prize. Thanks to everyone who solved and entered!
